My Role
Joined the project post-research and development to design the user interface and refine the onboarding experience for the AI chatbot.
Timeline
In 4 weeks, I summarized prior research, enhanced the design system, and iterated high-fidelity prototypes to refine and finalize the onboarding process.
Problem
New users of Kai often face a disjointed onboarding experience, lacking clear guidance and engaging interactions. This leads to confusion, lower satisfaction, and reduced adoption of the AI-powered teaching assistant's features.
Challenge
Design a seamless, engaging, and user-friendly onboarding process that effectively guides new users through setup, increasing satisfaction and driving better utilization of Kai's features.
Research
With prior research already completed, I summarized the findings into user stories to clearly capture user needs and pain points, guiding the design of an improved onboarding experience.

I summarized the findings from the user stories and identified key pain points for the onboarding process:
Unclear welcome screen: Fails to immediately convey purpose or guide first-time users.
Lack of consistent progress tracking: Users can't easily see how far they are in onboarding.
Inefficient profile input process: Data entry feels tedious and slows down onboarding.
Uncertainty about completing onboarding: Users aren't confident they've finished all required steps.

Design System
The existing design system uses a modern, professional typeface to convey credibility and clarity. I created a custom icon library organized into the following categories: action, arrow, editor, and navigation, for consistent visual language across the onboarding flow. The color palette centers on purple to align with Kai's existing character, paired with black to provide balance and contrast.

Hi-Fidelity Prototypes
I created a streamlined sign-up/login page with a product preview and Google sign-in, an onboarding welcome screen with a progress bar, step-by-step guided pop-ups introducing features, and a congratulations screen to mark completion and offer options to repeat onboarding or begin using the chatbot.
